Regarde tu as devant toi un homme absolument ravi

paris in the summer (?) [30 Sep 2008|09:23pm]

there is a new study abroad program at the university that's just being started up. it's through the department of women's and gender studies. they are going to paris over the summer and they need a french-speaking ta to go on the trip. the ta needs to be "fluent in french" (i.e. needs to be able to order food for like 14 people, get directions, generally communicate with parisians), will teach a prep class spring quarter, and will be with the group on the trip.

there's a stipend for teaching the prep class spring quarter. there's per diem on the trip. there is a free plane ticket to paris. there's housing once you're there.

all the tas are applying, of course, except maybe jonathan and i don't like him anyway.

jenny, helen, and i went to lindley today to see what was going on because we all got this email like 2 weeks ago and no one has heard back. turns out the woman running the program has been out of town so she hasn't been reading our emails that toe the fine line between enthusiastic and desperate. the woman we spoke to said she didn't know what the process would be like, nor did she know when it would take place. it seems that it's going to be based on a resume -- it's not exactly a fair way to judge someone's speaking abilities, especially since the woman running the trip has no knowledge of the language herself.

but i suppose i'll cross that bridge when i come to it.

anyway, i really want to go to paris this summer. really really. i talked to dad about it and he said it was a great idea. it would be so fantastic to go there and be able to just be. i really want to go.

in french we were talking about madame bovary and duvert was really excited about our group's conversation, which is always cool

linguistics is such a fun class, we are goofy but we are also learning a lot

i get to be the chair of the university professor selection committee and it is so excitinggggggggggg

aaaaaand i only have one class tomorrow, then i am meeting a friend for lunch and it should be fun.

paris is an amazing city. i would very much like to live there someday.

"everyone here is pretentious! 'I SPENT A SEMESTER IN PROVENCE!'"

france is still french. there are still baguettes and croissants, but not so many people wearing striped shirts and berets. we're about halfway through and it doesn't feel like it at all. i feel like we got here a couple of days ago. i don't know. maybe it's because we don't really ever have any real homework. it's bizarre. what can i say?

this is rambly and doesn't make sense. sorry. lame entry. oh well.

so here we are, the end of the third week. i feel like i got here a couple of days ago. i haven't really adjusted and i feel like i'm on vacation (a vacation with lots of excruciatingly boring classes) and i'm starting to wonder when it's going to be time to go home. it's fun here and it's different and i like being able to speak french and have people understand me, but you have no idea how much i would like to drink out of a big glass. some things here are better, some things here are not as good, but everything here is different. i'm just homesick.

i don't know, i got nothin'

france is fun, guys. my host family is a little bit crazy but very nice. the japanese kid i live with has a lot of trouble with french but he tries hard. my classes aren't too bad so far, and i like the city a lot.

i am leaving for france a week from thursday.

i have a list of things to do between now and then that is so daunting that i can't even think about it all at once.

why am i writing in my livejournal when i could be studying for exams or working on papers? because i procrastinate, that's why.

i wish i could put off freaking out about going to another country for a quarter. selective procrastination abilities are not as convenient as you might think.

that is all.

at the resquest of one mr. a.j. shemas, i will perhaps begin writing in this again.

maybe i'll write about france in my livejournal. we'll have to see, i suppose.

for right now, though, nothing but meaningless, frivolous entries will be found.

ha ha.

stolen from jennifer. ha ha.

Hardback or Paperback?
depends...if it's something really long (harry potter, anyone?), i'll go for hardback because they last longer, but i would not trade my paperback of a wrinkle in time that is missing its cover for a hardback version for anything. so a little bit of both.

Highlight or Underline?
i underline everything. only when i have to annotate, though, because i do not usually like writing in books. it's mean.

Lewis or Tolkien?
i'm gonna say lewis because i couldn't finisih rotk. it got toooooooo boring.

E.B. White or A.A. Milne?
both! i loved charlotte's web and we have the poetry books...when we were very young and now we are six or something to that effect

T.S. Eliot or e.e. cummings?
hahaha. e.e. cummings, if for no other reason than an objection to cats.

Stephen King or Dean Koontz?

Barnes & Noble or Borders?
i like borders. it's affiliated with waldenbooks.

Waldenbooks or B. Dalton?
waldenbooks. duh.

Fantasy or Science Fiction?
i rather like fantasy, but i did go through a sci-fi phase. it happens to the best of us, i suppose...i'm not really a trekkie sort of person.

Horror or Suspense?
neither. ugh.

Bookmark or Dogear?
bookmark, because dog-earing is right up there with writing in books. cruelty.

Hemingway or Faulkner?
ughhh neither. hemingway is the sun also rises and faulker makes me want to die.

Fitzgerald or Steinbeck?
fitzgerald. i did not enjoy the grapes of wrath.

John Irving or John Updike?
umm...yeah, i'm gonna have to go with a resounding neither.

Homer or Plato?
i dunno.

Geoffrey Chaucer or Edmund Spenser?
we read some chaucer and some spenser this past year...i rather liked the canterbury tales we read, and all we read of spenser was a few sonnets.

Pen or Pencil?
depends on what book it is. paradise lost was very much a purple pen book, but most of them are pencil, which i later regret because my comments get all smeary.

Looseleaf or Notebook?
little bit of both

Alphabetize: By Author or By Title?
author. my books are alphabetized by author and divided into years i read them, then i go into various series i've read outside of school, then to individual books...it gets a little messy, because i try to put them in order from when i first read them and it doesn't so much work out all the time.

Dustjacket: On or Off?
off when i'm reading, on on the shelf.

Novella or Epic?
novella, i think.

John Grisham or Scott Turow?
john grisham. good quick reads.

J.K. Rowling or Lemony Snicket?
umm. right now i'm mad at jk rowling because she's taking a year off to spend time with her kids before she even starts the next book and lemony snicket's next one is coming out in like november...i'll just not answer this one.

Fiction or Non-fiction?
fiction, with the very specific exception of david sedaris.

Historical Biography or Historical Romance?
i'm not much of a biography person...

A Few Pages per Sitting or Finish at Least a Chapter?
forget a chapter, finish at least a book

Short Story or Creative Non-fiction Essay?
depends on my mood.

"It was a dark and stormy night" or "Once upon a time"?
they're both so trite...if i have to choose, i'll go with "once upon a time" because it brings up mental images of fluffy clouds and places where things can never go wrong and everyone lives happily ever after, which is a nice thought even if it's not a reality.

Buy or borrow?
i don't borrow books. i lend books, and i'm a bitch of a librarian.

Book Reviews or Word of Mouth?
well, i don't read book reviews, so it's usually word of mouth.

...too bad i like book surveys best now...

omfg. i cannot begin to explain to everyone how incredible it is to know that tomorrow, i will no longer be responsible for the youngest of the lavric girls. ugh. it's like knowing when someone you dislike is going to die. you would get really excited the day before and laugh at them a lot because you know what's going to happen when the proverbial shit hits the fan. same thing, only helena's not going to die. she's just going to have to deal with mom and dad instead of me and natalia, and at least she heeds mom and dad a little bit more than she listens to us.

yay for not moms.

i laugh at helena.

she hates showtunes with a fiery passion and i have a veritable library of them in my head. she is totally screwed. i can hiss them in her ears when she is not expecting it.

that's right, it's me.

[L, Theol.] /sin tuh REE sis/
that part of conscience which serves as a guide for conduct; conscience as directive of one's actions (also synderesis)

not to be confused with:

/sin uh DEE sis/
that part of conscience which is concerned with passing judgement on acts already performed

thank you, worthless word for the day
